Immediately after breakfast Jason and Brady had another short session and Aislinn watched even more carefully than before. She saw nothing different, except this time Jason didn’t seem to feel so bad after they finished. Again he sat for a few minutes in silence but soon his color came back and he suggested another walk.

Twice Aislinn called to the boy from well behind him on the path and he ran back to her both times.

Jason just grinned. “Testing, Aislinn?”

“Yes. Of course I am. He’s so much better it’s hard to believe.”

“As I told you, my dear. I’ll tackle the vision problem next. It might be a little harder. Jenny tells me it will involve both the brain and the eyes.”

“Oh, Jason.”

She fastened her eyes on his grave face. She could obviously think of nothing else to say. Or nothing she wanted to say.

They chatted about the various trees, which Jason asked Aislinn to identify.

“I grew up in the country around Dover and have a pretty fair knowledge of some of the trees. I recognize the birches and willows, of course. Jenny’s property, Blue Meadows, has a river cutting through and willows grow thickly along part of it.”

She pointed out which oaks were native to Ireland and also the rowan trees. Jason was interested, although he only commented he’d heard how important rowans were to the ancient Druids. They noted a few native cherry trees, with the abundant but small cherries starting to ripen. Once he pulled a little book from his pocket when they spotted a very small bird with a blue cap, black and white face and beige underbelly.

“Look Aislinn, there’s a blue tit. Isn’t he beautiful?”

She tried not to smile at his enthusiasm.

“They wing in often to my bird feeder and I love them. And they are exquisite little things.”

“Oh.” He sounded so disappointed she grinned. “They’re not rare then. I hoped I’d spotted a little seen species.”

She shook her head and patted his hand as he first tensed and then smiled at her. Brady raced up and down the path, Atlas yapping at his heels. When they’d gone farther than the last time Jason insisted he was tired and wanted to turn back. Aislinn grinned at his rather obvious ploy but did as he suggested. The vigorous man didn’t look in the least tired.

When they reached the cabin Jason fixed them cold pancakes spread with liberal amounts of jam and a slice of cheese and folded into sandwiches. Although both Brady and Aislinn looked doubtful, they piled in and ate every scrap of their share.

Aislinn was about to offer to clean up the small disorder in the kitchen but changed her mind when Jason ruffled Brady’s bright curls.

“Let’s go, Brady. Time for another counting session.”

As Brady scrambled up on the stool Jason turned serious.

“Do you think, just this once, you could count to one hundred and then start all over and do it again.”

“’Course, Mr. Jason.”

“It’s pretty hard but let’s try.”

“Extra marshmallows?” the boy teased.

Jason kept his tone light.
